BMW Software Updates

There are BMW specific software updates for the late model cars the company produces. The software runs the computer in your BMW and interprets the readings from all the sensors and modules inside your car and makes adjustments to fuel, transmission, suspension, and engine controls to make your engine run optimally. If the computer detects that a component is not working optimally the computer will put the car into reduced power mode. This will make your BMW run rough and limit the car’s drivability.

As BMWs age and components wear out they don’t work as well as they were originally intended to run. The various components might still be working well enough for everyday driving, but may be slightly out of tolerance. This can cause the check engine light to come on your BMW. As BMW becomes aware of these issues they release software updates for their cars that reprogram the computer to increase the range of acceptable parameters. This allows the car to run properly after the new software update is installed. This process requires having specialized computers and electrical equipment to perform the software update correctly as any mistake during the update process can corrupt the data and damage the computer. If the data is corrupted the BMW will not be able to start as the computer will not be communicating with the various modules to run your car.

This type of service should only be performed at a shop that has the special knowledge, tools, and computers that has extensive knowledge on BMW.
